Are you struggling to stay focused and preventing overwhelm?
Whether it’s society or business coaches, you hear so many different opinions on what you should be focusing on or doing. But that can feel overwhelming. So how do you make better decisions and choices for yourself and your business and silence the chatter?
As a child-free business owner, you have the unique advantage of being able to focus on your business without any child-related distractions. However, with so many decisions to make and choices to consider each day, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to focus on.
Understanding WHY You get Overwhelmed
Before we dive into the tips, let’s clarify what overwhelm means. Overwhelm can be defined as feeling strongly about something that you don’t know how to deal with, feeling defeated, or feeling like there is too much of something.
When you’re overwhelmed, it can negatively impact your decision-making and choices. For example, you may make hasty decisions without considering all the options or make poor choices due to a lack of focus.
ON top of that, you may have a hard time distinguishing the difference between your opinions from societal pressure. And this can certainly keep you stuck and doubt yourself.
Preventing Overwhelm and Gaining Focus
Now, let’s talk about some ways to prevent overwhelm and increase your focus: to then make better decisions.
Tip #1: Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
Breaking down complex tasks backwards into smaller, more manageable steps can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed. This approach allows you to focus on one task at a time and complete it before moving on to the next. It also helps you to create a clear plan of action and prioritize your tasks more effectively. By breaking tasks down into smaller steps, you can see progress more easily, which can be motivating and help you stay focused.
Tip #2: Prioritize tasks and decisions based on importance and urgency.
When you have a lot of tasks to complete, it can be challenging to determine where to start. I will share my favorite way of doing this in a moment.
Tip #3: Use time management techniques to help you stay on track and focus on the most important tasks.
Time management techniques, such as calendar blocking, can help you to allocate your time more effectively and stay focused on the most important tasks. By scheduling time for each task, you can ensure that you have enough time to complete it and avoid multitasking, which can lead to decreased productivity and increased stress.

Tip #4: Practice mindfulness and meditation to clear your mind and reduce stress.
Practicing mindfulness and meditation can help you clear your mind, reduce stress, and increase focus. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and focusing on your thoughts and feelings without judgment. By practicing mindfulness, you can reduce stress and anxiety, which can help you make clearer decisions and stay focused.
Mindfulness and meditation can look different for you than it is for me. For me, that means doing yoga, walking in nature, zoning out while sipping coffee. Etc. It’s about awareness and being in the moment. So do what you’re comfortable with.
Tip #5: Eliminate distractions and set boundaries.
Distractions can make it challenging to stay focused on a task, and they can contribute to feeling overwhelmed. Setting boundaries, such as turning off notifications on your phone or closing computer tabs that you’re not currently using, can help you eliminate distractions and stay focused. You’ll be less likely to waste time on activities that aren’t essential to your work.
Strategies for Making Better Choices and Decisions
Now that we’ve talked about how to prevent overwhelm and increase focus,
Tip #1: Reduce day-to-day decision fatigue
Research has shown that decision-making can be mentally exhausting and can lead to decision fatigue, which can decrease your ability to make good decisions over time. Therefore, the less decisions you have to make, the better. One way to reduce decision fatigue is to automate your routine as much as possible. This can include meal planning, laying out your clothes the night before, putting your bills on autopay, and planning your schedule for the night/week before. By eliminating small, routine decisions, you free up mental energy to focus on more important decisions that require your attention and creativity.
Tip #2: Identify Your Priorities
Before making any decisions, it’s important to identify your priorities. What are the most important aspects of your business that you need to focus on? What are the goals you want to achieve?
The Eisenhower Matrix is a tool I love to use to help me distinguish how important or urgent a task is.

Once you have a clear understanding of your priorities, you can make decisions that align with them. This will help you avoid distractions and prevent overwhelm, allowing you to focus on what’s truly important.
Tip #3: Take Time to Reflect
When you’re faced with a decision, it’s important to take some time to reflect on your options. Don’t rush into a decision without considering all the possible outcomes. Take a step back, review your priorities, and consider the pros and cons of each option. This will help you make a more informed decision and avoid making a hasty choice that you might later regret.
Tip #4: Break it Down
Sometimes decisions can seem overwhelming, especially if they involve multiple factors. One way to prevent overwhelm is to break down the decision into smaller, more manageable parts. This will help you focus on each aspect individually and make a more informed decision overall. For example, if you’re deciding whether or not to launch a new product, you could break it down into smaller tasks such as researching the market, developing the product, creating a marketing plan, and determining pricing. By tackling each task one at a time, you can prevent overwhelm and make a more informed decision.
Tip #5: Get a Second Opinion
It’s always helpful to get a second opinion when you’re faced with a difficult decision. Ask a trusted colleague or mentor for their input and advice. This can provide you with a fresh perspective and help you make a better decision. However, it’s important to remember that ultimately the decision is yours to make. Use the feedback you receive to inform your decision, but don’t let others make the decision for you.
Tip #6: Trust Your Gut
Finally, trust your gut. As a child-free business owner, you have the advantage of being able to rely on your instincts without distractions. If something doesn’t feel right, take the time to reconsider your options. Your intuition can be a powerful tool in helping you make better decisions. However, it’s important to balance your gut instincts with rational thinking and data-driven decision-making.
Overall, by practicing these tips, you can improve your decision-making skills and reduce overwhelm, allowing you to make informed decisions that align with your priorities and help you achieve your business goals.
